Crystal Lake, IL — Craft breweries in the Midwest and the Chicagoland area will soon have a new packaging option thanks to the fast-growing trend of mobile beverage canning. Midwest Mobile Canning (MMC) will begin operations in November 2013, initially offering its services to breweries in the Midwest and Chicagoland area.
The family business, owned by Terry McGinnis and operated by his two sons, Joel and Jeff was conceived with the idea that local craft brewers needed the option of having their beer in cans without the need to put capital in a canning line that takes up valuable space in their facility.
“Mobile canning is a turn-key solution for breweries who are looking for a cost-effective way to expand their packaging options and enter new retail distribution channels,” said Terry.
The McGinnis's read about mobile canning and discussed the option with a few local brewers. After some research they learned about Mobile Canning Systems'(MCS) affiliate network and decided to add Midwest Mobile Canning to the growing list of mobile canning affiliates throughout the United States.
“Joining the MCS affiliate network will allow us to bring cans to the local brewing community by capitalizing on the success of other mobile canners around the country. We are in the infant stages of this program. It is growing leaps and bounds every day with more options for the brewers,” said Terry.
Midwest Mobile Canning purchased their canning equipment from Wild Goose Canning Technologies of Boulder, CO.
“When you're providing a solution it only makes sense to use the best tools possible for the job. The Wild Goose Canning line fits the bill perfectly – quality construction, built in the U.S. by a small business, and offers unparalleled quality control.” MMC's equipment will fill 30 to 40 cans per minute, or up to 80 barrels per day and uses only supplies made in the USA.
The number of craft breweries in the area is over 100. That number grows on a monthly basis and is expected to continue to grow for a few years. While there has been some debate about the quality and taste of beer in cans versus bottles, cans are proving to be the latest evolution in the craft brew world. Not only does putting craft beer in cans allow brewers to expand their retail distribution, it is also more environmentally conscious and consumer friendly.
We are currently working with numerous local breweries in the Chicagoland to bring their beer to market in a can. The next time you are in your favorite brewery ask them when they will have their brew in a can.
For consumers, craft beer becomes more accessible giving them a wide range of options and allowing them to incorporate their favorite beer into outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and fishing, where bottles are prohibited. Aluminum cans are lightweight and can be easily transported to beaches, state parks or outdoor recreation areas. Since cans are lighter to transport, delivery trucks use less fuel, and the cans are 100% recyclable, making them an environmentally friendly option. Cans also block out light, preventing oxidization, preserving quality and taste of the beer, and are very durable.
We are currently working with numerous local breweries to bring their beer to market in a can. We are also working with Big Chicago Brewery, a contract brewery, to provide canning services for their clients. The next time you are in your favorite brewery ask them when they will have their brew in a can.
If the growing popularity of craft beer in cans is any indication of the industry's future, then brewers and consumers from Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin have something to celebrate.
