‘Everything’s new’ at St. Patrick School’s Literacy Resource Center
Submitted by St. Patrick School
When classes at St. Patrick School in Wadsworth began recently, the students got their first glimpse of the newly christened Literacy Resource Center, the former school library. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at which Fr. Fred Pesek, pastor of St. Patrick Church, gave a special blessing to the facility.
The students and faculty gathered to mark the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Also present for the ceremony were Liz Dworak, principal, and Andy Hayes, chairman of the school board.
Under the supervision of librarian Ann Orchard, the LRC was remodeled over the summer. New books and electronic devices, including iPads, were purchased. The LRC includes a new “reading bar,” with stools along a small book counter.
“Everything we have is new,” Orchard said. “We have iPads, computers, and audiovisual equipment for read-alouds. We are hooking up our resources with the new state common core standards.”
Mary Richter and Lauren Standriff are the school’s two reading specialists.
“We’re moving forward to make the library a place for students to learn about research strategies, and to become lifelong readers,” Richter said.
In an effort to provide St. Patrick students with resources and computer technology to keep up with their coursework, the parish school has made a solid commitment to investing in the latest technology. The LRC serves as an extension of the classroom by supporting and enriching the curriculum.
Founded in 1956, St. Patrick School is rich in tradition and is a Catholic, child-centered, elementary school. It offers a fully accredited, challenging academic program for kindergartners through eighth-graders.
The school is at 15020 Wadsworth Road in Wadsworth.
