Illinois hunters prefer lead despite eagle concerns
Despite pushes by environmentalists to curb the amount of lead ammunition used by hunters, sportsmen in southern Illinois say they'll continue using the lead when trying to get their next deer.
WSIL-TV reports many of the region's hunters appreciate concerns that scavengers such as bald eagles that feed on deer remains left by hunters using lead ammunition may become poisoned.
Brandon Pritchett of Marion says he'd consider switching to copper or alloy ammunition, but he says such options are difficult to find and potentially more expensive.
Another hunter, Myron Evrard of Marion, says he's unaware of any alternative to lead on the market and that lead is easier on the gun barrel.
Environmentalists have said lead poisoning kills 10 million to 20 million birds and other animals every year.
