Jewel-Osco Observes Hispanic Heritage Month Through “Sabor de la Herencia Hispana” Festivities
(Itasca, Ill.) Sept. 9, 2013 – Jewel-Osco, a leading Midwest food and drug retailer, will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with its 6th Annual “Sabor de la Herencia Hispana” program, which honors the contributions and achievements of the Hispanic community.
The initiative will kick off with a VIP customer appreciation event for shoppers and the community from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 12, 2013 at the Jewel-Osco at 5320 S. Pulaski in Chicago, featuring live music by a six-piece Mariachi Band, Mexico Vivo. During the VIP shopping event, consumers can take advantage of special savings opportunities and enter a sweepstakes to win a gift basket worth $100 in product and gift cards, plus sign up for a chance to win four tickets to any destination through U.S. and Mexico, courtesy of Sierra Mist. “Sabor de la Herencia Hispana” customer tasting events will continue throughout September and October at selected stores.
“A variety of rich cultures define the communities within the Chicagoland neighborhoods where our Jewel-Osco stores are located. Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with our shoppers is just one way that we can show our appreciation for them and also offer them a taste of their favorite local flavors,” said Jewel-Osco President William Emmons.
Culinary students from St. Augustine College will put their creativity and imagination to the test, preparing signature Latin-American recipes that incorporate an array of vendor products. The students will participate in a friendly cooking competition using a variety of ingredients to design their own authentic Latino recipe. The winning duo will be crowned after customers vote for their favorite dishes, and not only get bragging rights but also a grand prize of a monetary scholarship provided by Jewel-Osco and Kimberly-Clark. There will be $5,000 total in combined winnings awarded between participating students towards their educations.
Following the kick off, the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration will continue with a series of in-store culinary events featuring additional authentic Latin-American dishes prepared by St. Augustine chefs and culinary students, valuable prizes and fun for the entire family. The events will take place at the following locations:
