On July 9, the Friends of Lords Park Zoo was presented with a donation of $1,737 from Elgin Elks Lodge 737 to increase the elk herd. Lodge members encourage visitors to Lords Park Zoo to learn more about both the animal and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.
In 1867, a group of professional and semiprofessional entertainers who became known as the “Jolly Corks” started meeting weekly for social and convivial purposes. At a meeting on Feb. 2, 1868, a motion was made to organize the “Jolly Corks” as a benevolent and fraternal organization under a new name.
“The Order of Buffalos” was originally suggested as the name of this new organization, but the majority were desirous of bestowing a distinctively American title instead.
Members who had been impressed with a fine elk’s head occupying a conspicuous place in “Barnum’s Museum” visited Cooper Institute Library, where they found the elk described in a work on natural history as an animal “fleet of foot, timorous of wrong, but ever ready to combat in defense of self or the female of the species.”
This description appealed to the group as containing admirable qualities for emulation by a benevolent fraternity, and on Feb. 16, 1868, the “Jolly Corks” became the “Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.”
Since its inception, the Elks National Foundation has contributed more than $324.6 million toward Elks’ charitable projects nationwide. These funds enable programs that support youth, honor veterans, and meet needs in areas where Elks live and work.
The programs continue to grow each year, allowing Elks to do even more to build stronger communities.
