Raise a glass to Hoffman Estates’ Germanfest on Saturday

The Hoffman Estates Arts Commission is bringing back its Oktoberfest-themed outdoor event, Platzkonzert Germanfest, sponsored by Audi Hoffman Estates and Bosch Rexroth Corp., on Saturday, Sept. 7.

This year, Platzkonzert will be twice as long — from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Additionally, it will feature two stages, multiple German bands, a local dance troupe, kids’ activities, contests with cash prizes and more.

Platzkonzert will take place rain or shine at the Virginia Mary Hayter Village Green, 5510 Prairie Stone Parkway off Route 72 in the Prairie Stone Business Park, just west of the Sears Centre Arena.

Parking and entry are free.

There will be six dedicated food areas, including a Brat Haus, gourmet selections, a dessert tent, snacks and more.

The Hoffman Estates Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association will sell Pepsi products, juice boxes and water to raise funds for the Hoffman Estates Police Department K-9 unit.

Finally, a selection of German beers and wine will be available for purchase. What better way to complement authentic bratwurst, German potato salad, sauerkraut, schnitzel and strudel?

Authentic Bavarian music will be provided by the Johnny Wagner Band, the Walter Flechsig Band, Impact of Brass, the Tenors Three and the Internationals.

Allegro Dance Companies from the Hanover Park School of Dance at the Hanover Park Park District will also entertain. There will be a climbing wall sponsored by the Hoffman Estates Park District, and giant inflatables for kids.

Feeling competitive? There will be numerous games, including a “Mr. Lederhosen” best legs contest (sponsored by Stone Eagle Tavern), a stein-carrying contest (sponsored by the Hoffman Estates Chamber of Commerce) and a wiener speed-eating contest (sponsored by Rookies All American Pub & Grill). All competitions feature cash prizes.

“What a great time to celebrate the fall season,” said Michelle Pilafas, chairwoman of the Arts Commission. “Grab a bratwurst, compete in a fun German-themed contest and enjoy the music and dance of local German groups. We are looking forward to sharing a strudel with you!”

“Platzkonzert is a wonderful celebration of all that is German — from delicious ethnic fare to wonderful entertainment,” added Mayor William D. McLeod. “This daylong outdoor event features fun activities and entertainment perfect for the whole family. And all with a great German flair.”

Parking is east of the venue across the street from the old fire station. Handicapped parking is west of the venue. Only those cars with handicap placards may park there. The village will provide a shuttle for handicapped patrons to and from the handicapped parking lot.

While there will be limited seating in some areas, bring lawn chairs and blankets for amphitheater seating.
