Rockford sculpture getting new coat of paint

ROCKFORD — A massive Rockford sculpture is getting cleaned up — and its first fresh coat of paint in more than a decade.

The 30-ton abstract piece is called the Symbol and has become a landmark in Rockford’s Sinnissippi Park. It was built in 1978 by Alexander Liberman.

WREX-TV reports the orange piece will be repainted a bright, vibrant red.

Crews are working to clean, sand and prime the 47-foot-tall sculpture. They’re set to begin painting on Thursday.

It’s the first paint job on the piece since 2002.

The Rockford Register Star says the makeover will cost about $6,500.
