Clowns deserve more respect

On Tuesday’s editorial page, Kathleen Parker commented that she finds clowns creepy.

As an amateur clown myself, I’d like to weigh in on this issue. It’s unfortunate that Hollywood so often portrays clowns as evil, since this gives us a bad reputation. In fact, the many clowns I’ve met are the most warmhearted, outgoing people you’d ever want to meet.

They focus on bringing good clean humor to everyone, especially to children and those suffering distress. There are even specific subgroups, often referred to as the “Caring Clown Ministry,” who specialize in entertaining at hospitals, shelters, Sunday schools, and nursing homes.

I personally entertain on a purely volunteer basis at charitable events and at nursing homes. I do encounter very young children and even some adults who are afraid of clowns, and in those situations I avoid imposing myself on them. However, the majority of people I meet when “in clown” are happy to see me, and if I can reciprocate by bringing a smile to their face, then that makes my day.

I certainly do not feel creepy.
