Illinois State Univ. professor heading to Arctic
NORMAL, Ill. — An Illinois State University professor is heading to the Arctic to draw inspiration for an environmentally conscious, large-scale art installation.
Claire Lieberman is an associate professor in the university's School of Art.
She is among a select group of artists and scientists scheduled to sail to the territory 10 degrees from the North Pole on a fully rigged tall ship this fall.
Lieberman will have the opportunity to view polar bears in their natural habitat. She then plans a large-scale art installation that will include a series of glass sculptures of polar bears that appear to be melting.
Lieberman says she hopes her work will increase awareness about climate change.
