Oakton Place hosts regional U.S. Army training
On Aug. 2, and again on Aug. 16, the U.S. Army held required training classes for the U.S. Army Recruitment Center personnel at Oakton Arms, a senior living facility, 1665 Oakton Place, Des Plaines. There have been challenges for the Army to find locations within the North/Northwest suburban area to host these training classes.
“It is an honor and a privilege to be able to assist our military in conducting training that will benefit us all,” said Jay Lewkowitz, executive director of Oakton Place. Following the training session, the soldiers met with a captivated audience of seniors, all residents of Oakton Place. There are discussions under way for Oakton Place to become a permanent training site for the local U.S. Army Recruiting Center in Mount Prospect and on a company level, as well.
“We need to focus on what unites us in this country, and our senior population is leading the way. The mutual respect and admiration between the seniors and the soldiers is inspirational. The seniors understand the sacrifice our service persons give, and the soldiers need to hear their praises sung,” said Lewkowitz.
On Aug. 16, the soldiers and the tenants of Oakton Arms lunched together to further solidify their relationships.
Oakton Place is comprised of Oakton Pavillion, a newly remodeled short-term rehabilitation and nursing facility, and Oakton Arms, a 102-unit independent living building adjacent to each other.
