Music notes: Kid Rock, ZZ Top play First Midwest Friday

His name is ...

Kid Rock, who has shifted from a rap-rock bad boy who screamed out such songs as “Bawitdaba” to a more restrained rocker exploring country and classic soul, brings his live show to the suburbs this weekend. ZZ Top and Uncle Kracker share the bill.

Prepare to dance

Labor Day might be upon us, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy one last summer music festival. The North Coast Festival sets up shop in Chicago’s Union Park all weekend, delivering a slew of electronic, pop and hip-hop acts guaranteed to get the crowd dancing. Among the prominent acts on the bill this year are dance-pop group Passion Pit, the legendary rap outfit Wu-Tang Clan, local rising stars JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound, Chicago rapper ProbCause and many others. A great way to send off the summer.

Local rocker

Cathy Richardson, who grew up in the suburbs of DuPage County, will perform with the Cathy Richardson Band this weekend in Chicago. Richardson has had a long and varied career, playing Janis Joplin in an off-Broadway musical, performing with Jefferson Starship and building a devoted following with her own band. She is always a magnetic stage presence, galvanizing audiences with her energy and stellar rock voice.
