Village of Perry to unveil veterans memorial
PERRY, Ill. — The village of Perry in western Illinois plans to unveil a new veterans’ memorial this weekend.
The money for the memorial was left by late resident Floyd “Stub” Smith. The village will debut the memorial on Saturday at its annual Pioneer Days celebration.
Smith’s daughter-in-law, Vivian Smith, tells The Quincy Herald-Whig that Smith thought “all parts of the service ought to be recognized.”
Perry Mayor Rex Olson says he gathered more than 600 names of Perry-area veterans who served going back to the Revolutionary War. The names are engraved on the memorial. The memorial also has the insignia of all branches of service.
Perry is about 40 miles east of Quincy in Pike County.
