Akron advances in NPF

The Akron Racers opened the National Pro Fastpitch Championship tournament with a 4-2 victory Thursday over the NY/NJ Comets at The Ballpark at Rosemont.

Akron advanced behind Sam Marder’s three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth, will now play No. 2 seeded USSSA Pride (Florida) in Game 2 of the NPF tournment at 5:30 p.m. today in Rosemont.

The Chicago Bandits (36-12), the regular-season champions, earned a bye and will play the Akron-USSSA winner in Game 3 at 8:30 p.m. Friday in a best-of-three series format. Friday’s games will be carried livestream at www.profastpitch.com.

Saturday’s play will open with Game 4 carried live on ESPN2 at 4 p.m. If a Game 5 is necessary, it will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday.
