Lombard police to crackdown on drunk driving, seatbelt enforcement through Labor Day

From Aug. 17 through the Labor Day weekend, Lombard Police will be out in force as part of the annual Illinois “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” crackdown on drunk drivers.

The statewide crackdown will include high-visibility alcohol and belt enforcement throughout Lombard and will run through Sept. 3.

The Lombard Police Department is planning a roadside safety check at an undisclosed location on Aug. 31. The crackdown effort against impaired drivers and seat belt law violators underscores the disproportionate number of traffic deaths involving alcohol and unbelted motorists.

The law enforcement crackdown is funded by federal traffic safety funds through the Illinois Department of Transportation. The effective statewide crackdown will also be supported by national and state paid advertising, creating a comprehensive campaign to curb drunk driving.

Deputy Police Chief Tom Wirsing said Lombard Police officers will be aggressively looking for drunk drivers during the crackdown and will arrest anyone caught driving drunk. In addition, seat belt law violators will be ticketed. Wirsing added that holidays such as Labor Day are particularly dangerous.
