Prospect Hts. police take at-risk kids on field trips
On Aug. 13, Prospect Heights police officers, city employees and volunteers offered their time to assist staff from Indian Trails Library District to accompany 22 youths on a field trip to the Mexican Museum of Fine Arts in Chicago.
While at the museum, the children were able to participate in a cultural arts-based tour of exhibits and interactive experience. The tour and hands-on interaction afforded the children the ability to increase their knowledge and appreciation of this particular culture. After the tour, the children were provided a lunch courtesy of Monica’s Restaurant in Prospect Heights.
Officer Joe Whowell, who coordinated this event, thanked Prospect Heights city administrator Anne Marrin and Mayor Nick Helmer, as well as the staff of the Indian Trails Library District, for their assistance in supporting efforts to restart police outreach work in the community
“The guidance and assistance we received helps inspire us to develop a strong program which will continue to strengthen the relationships within our community,” said Whowell.
This is the second event in a series of field trips organized by the Indian Trails Library District, volunteers and employees from the Prospect Heights Police Department as a means of outreach to at-risk youths. In July, the program was a government-awareness day that included a bike rodeo, tours of the police and fire department as well as a mock city hall meeting. A trip to the River Trails Nature Center and the Prospect Heights Park District is still on tap.
