Palatine teen awarded $10,000 scholarship

Jessica Streepy of Palatine was chosen from more than 35,000 Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program nominees as one of 10 students in the country to get $10,000 college scholarships.

Kohl’s will also donate $1,000 to the nonprofit organization of Jessica’s choice — One Day’s Wages.

When 12-year-old Jessica learned about the extreme poverty in Africa and the number of children dying from starvation and lack of clean water, she could not stand idly by.

She quickly became an advocate for the charity One Day’s Wages and began to educate family, friends and others about extreme global poverty, urging them to take action.

Jessica has raised more than $20,000 for One Day’s Wages. She started “B-U-Barrettes,” a business dedicated to creating homemade hair and hat clips and scarves, with profits going to One Day’s Wages to help alleviate extreme global poverty.

Jessica sells her homemade creations at home parties, craft shows and at a local boutique with a portion of the proceeds going to One Day’s Wages.

The Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program is part of Kohl’s Cares, Kohl’s philanthropic program focused on improving the lives of children. For more information, visit www.kohls.com/cares.
