Naperville train rider gets 10 years in 'medical-grade' marijuana bust

A Naperville train rider whose carry-on luggage was stuffed with “medical-grade” marijuana has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Jimmie Medcalf, 30, of Chicago, was caught with the drugs in December after he stepped off an Amtrak train at Naperville's Fourth Avenue depot.

Naperville Sgt. Lou Cammiso said officers had Medcalf under surveillance after receiving a tip from a California law enforcement agency about a shipment of drugs.

Medcalf took off running when police approached but was quickly apprehended in the depot parking lot, according to police.

In Medcalf's travel bag, officers found about 7 pounds of “medical-grade” marijuana, Cammiso said. Police estimated the street value at $60,000.

Medcalf pleaded guilty to manufacture or delivery of marijuana in June and was sentenced Friday by DuPage County Judge Daniel Guerin, court records show.

Co-defendant Charles Scott, 43, of Chicago, who is accused of being Medcalf's driver, has pleaded not guilty to cannabis trafficking and is due back in court Aug. 27.

Both men have been in the county jail since December.
