Art exhibit in Bartlett celebrates Taiwan and Hakka cultures
Arts in Bartlett presents a new exhibit, “Celebrating Taiwan and Hakka Culture” running through Friday, Aug. 30, at the Bartlett Village Hall 2nd Floor Gallery, 228 Main St., in Bartlett. The gallery is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays.
This exhibit comes from the Tung Blossom Painting Exhibit first shown at the Midwest Hakka Association’s New Year’s Party. Six Hakka family members from the association, who live in the Chicago area, created more than 10 paintings, including Jessie Lee, Melissa Chiou, Judy Tseng, Andrea Lin, Nancy Chen and Linda Tsai. The Tung Blossom Festival art now comes to the Bartlett Village Hall’s Gallery to promote Bartlett’s sister city, Miaoli, Taiwan, during August, with a brief absence Aug. 16 and 17 when it travels to the World Hakka Association Conference in Lisle.
One of the artists Jessie Lee explains the tung blossom theme:
“The tung tree has a very high economic value for Hakka people. The beautiful white flowers blooms in late spring and often creates a unique ‘May snow’ scene when the pedals fall onto the ground. The beautiful tung flowers are also shown in the Hakka fabric pattern. The tung blossom has become the flower for Hakka people.”
The public is invited to attend a reception to meet the artists from 5:30-6:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20.
