Naperville man wanted for failing to show in court
A 41-year-old man accused of stealing two guns and filing a bogus report to Batavia police in July 2012 missed a court hearing his week in which prosecutors wanted his bond increased or revoked.
An arrest warrant has been issued for Keith Clausen, formerly of Batavia and now of the 2200 block of Petworth Court, Naperville, according to Kane County Court records.
Clausen is charged with felony armed violence, aggravated possession of stolen firearms and filing a false police report.
He is accused of being armed with a .45-caliber handgun while he stole a shotgun and AR-15 assault rifle on July 27, 2012, and then filing a false police report about them being stolen, according to court records.
He spent several months in jail until posting $5,000 bond in February 2013.
Assistant State’s Attorney Alex Bederka sought to have Clausen’s bond increased or revoked because he was arrested by Naperville police May 31, 20123, and later charged with driving under the influence, two counts of leaving the scene of a crash and no insurance.
“The defendant has disregarded the condition of his bail bond and allegedly committed another offense,” Bederka wrote in court papers filed last month. “The defendant has shown an inability to follow the simplest conditions of bond, namely not to commit any new civil offenses, and in order to ensure the safety of the public, the defendant’s bond should be revoked.”
Clausen also missed a June 12 court appearance because he was in the hospital with liver failure, court records show. He was ordered to appear in court Wednesday and to provide proof of his hospitalization.
Clausen’s defense attorney, Sandra Byrd, declined to comment Thursday.
If convicted of the most serious charge, he faces between six and 30 years in prison.
