St. Matthew Lutheran Church to host 23rd annual Pig Roast Aug. 18

Located on Old McHenry Road between Quentin and Midlothian Roads, in Hawthorn Woods, St. Matthew Lutheran Church and School will hold its 23rd annual Pig Roast on Sunday, Aug. 18, with food being served from noon-5 p.m. This “fest” is part of a number of events that have taken place during St. Matthew’ 150th anniversary year.

Begun 23 years ago, St. Matthew member John Knoll asked a small group of women, who were working on the church’s annual chicken dinner, if they might be interested in having a pig roast. What began with two pigs so many years ago has now grown to an event that attracts people from miles around.

Roasting 15 pigs, and serving nearly 2,000 guests in 2012, St. Matthew will again prepare and serve a delicious meal of roast pork, German potato salad, baked beans, applesauce and hot, buttered sweet corn. Culver’s Ice Cream will be on the midway with ice cream cones and turtle sundaes. Hot dogs, ice tea, soda, wine and beer will also be available for an additional cost.

The Alpiner musicians will again return to provide musical entertainment throughout the afternoon.

In addition to the great midway games, Bob Hirsch, balloon master, will be entertaining all with his balloon creations. “Clowning Around,” starring Rick Colon, will also be on the midway with his comedy and magic, and there will be face painting and a space-walk for children. And of course, there will be the ever popular bingo.

Plan on a fun-filled afternoon, with delicious food, great entertainment and wonderful camaraderie. Admission is $12 for adults and $5 for children ages 4-10. Children younger than 4 are free.
