Apple pie bakers wanted for Naper Settlement’s Hometown Picnic contest

Dig through your cookbooks, search the Internet, or call up Grandma for her recipe and join Naper Settlement’s apple pie contest on Saturday, Aug. 10.

Naper Settlement invites bakers of all ages and skill levels to enter their favorite apple pie recipe to be judged by a panel of guest judges. The pies will be judged during the Hometown Picnic, which will be from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 10.

The Hometown Picnic is a day of games, including a cookie walk, water-balloon toss, watermelon seed-spitting contest, music and more.

All bakers must be preregistered by Wednesday, Aug. 7. To register, email Naper Settlement’s learning experiences coordinator at edgintonj@naperville.il.us or call (630) 305-5252. Provide your name, phone number or email and the name and type of pie (single or double crust). All pies must use apples as their key ingredient. Pies with apple and another fruit will be accepted. There is no rule on the type of crust.

All pies must be received by noon Aug. 10 in the Tavern at the Pre-Emption House Visitor Center, 523 S. Webster St. (corner of Aurora Avenue and Webster Street). Each pie should be turned in with an index card with the type of pie (single or double crust), the baker’s name, phone or email.

Judging will begin at 1 p.m. by our guest judges, including Naperville Mayor A. George Pradel; Dan Casey, owner of Casey’s Foods; Neda Darwish, owner of Sugar Monkey Cupcakes; and Stephanie Penick, Daily Herald columnist and publisher of Positively Naperville.
