Take part in Sugar Grove Corn Boil parade

The Sugar Grove Corn Boil, a nonprofit organization in Sugar Grove, will host its annual weekend festival July 26-28 at Volunteer Park in Sugar Grove.

For the past three years, the organization has organized a parade, as well as a theme to help celebrate the annual festival. Past themes included honoring the Girl Scouts 100-year anniversary, those serving in the military, and volunteerism.

On Friday, July 26, the Sugar Grove Corn Boil will honor and celebrate two milestones in Civil Rights legislation. 2013 marks the 50-year anniversary of the first civil rights bill legislation, and the 150-year anniversary of the Proclamation of Emancipation.

The opening ceremonies parade will be at 6 p.m. Friday, July 26. The parade will start at Municipal Drive and Bastian Drive and enter in at the west end of the park. If people are interested in watching, line up along Bastian Drive.

The organizers of the Corn Boil thought it was important to honor and educate the community about the importance of these landmark pieces of legislation, and how it helped millions of people who did not have the basic rights to vote, use the same restrooms, go to the same schools, and churches.

In addition to the usual parade participants, churches, community organizations, and local elected officials, an Abe Lincoln impersonator also will be present to recite the Emancipation Proclamation and talk about the impact and importance of the proclamation.
