Adaptive athletes, paralympian join golfers at Heart Of A Marine event

On Wednesday, Aug. 7, The Heart Of A Marine Foundation will host its eighth annual golf outing at Cog Hill Golf & Country Club to raise funds for its programs, projects and outreaches, in support of our military, in all branches of the Armed Forces, veterans, and their families.

This event will also host members of the adaptive athlete golf team from Edward Hines Jr., VA Hospital. “When Hines approached us with this idea, I thought Wonderful, why didn’t I think of this?” said Barbara Matsukes, director of marketing and public relations for The Heart Of A Marine Foundation. “We are incredibly honored to have Hines golfers with us on this day.”

The adaptive athletes will play a par three course directly across the street from Cog Hill, teeing off at the same time as the golf outing participants. The Hines athletes will be guests of The Foundation at a luncheon at Cog Hill in their honor, prior to teeing off.

Another special guest for the day is Melissa Stockwell. Stockwell, an Army veteran, was the first female soldier to lose a limb (left leg) while serving in Iraq. She was also selected for the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing, and is the current World Champion of the Tri2 class in the Paratriathlon. Stockwell is a mentor to other amputees and adaptive athletes. She remains active within the adaptive athlete community with her foundation, dare2tri. Stockwell and her guests will join the Hines golf team at the luncheon.

In prelude to the golf outing, The Foundation will host Ram~Mania! an annual fundraiser at the Ram Restaurant and Brewery, in Schaumburg. Monies raise at this event will assist in sending an active duty military member for a day of golf at Cog Hill. Ram~Mania! will held from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, July 25. A percentage of all food and beverage sales will come to The Heart Of A Marine Foundation during those hours. The Ram brews a special beer for this occasion, Black H’ops Beer. One hundred percent of all cash sales of Black H’ops Beer, sold during the designated hours, will benefit The Foundation. This event is open to the public, all are welcome. Dinner reservations are encouraged.

“We just love this event,” said Jeff Murray, general manager of The Ram in Schaumburg. “The Heart Of A Marine Foundation is a local organization doing great things for our military nationwide. It is just natural for us to help them in any way we can.”

Roy Frank, co-founder of The Heart Of A Marine Foundation, and Gold Star Dad added, “We are so incredible blessed by the generosity of The Ram management and staff. It is great to give our active duty military a fun day on leave, a round of golf is a nice way to do that. We will have at least one foursome from each of the branches of the Armed Forces, and The Ram helps us make that possible.”

The Heart Of A Marine Foundation was established in memory, honor and spirit of Marine Lance Corporal Phillip Frank, and serves all branches of the United States Armed Forces, veterans and their families.
