Fire damages 5 buildings in downtown Prophetsville

PROPHETSTOWN, Ill. — Northwestern Illinois officials say an overnight fire damaged at least five buildings in the small Whitehouse County community of Prophetstown.

Dispatcher Karen Stuart says Monday that the blaze began in a downtown restaurant around 2 a.m. and spread to at least five nearby buildings.

No major injuries were reported, but she says the Red Cross was helping residents of seven to eight apartments who were displaced.

The fire was mostly extinguished, although crews were still working to control hotspots.

Prophetstown has around 2,100 residents and is about 30 miles northeast of Moline.
