Celebrity quilter coming to NSQG

The Northwest Suburban Quilters Guild (NSQG) has plenty to offer quilters in the coming months.

First, NSQG is proud to announce that Internet radio quilt show sensation Pat Sloan will lecture on Thursday, Aug. 15, and teach workshops on Aug. 16 and 17.

Sloan will bring a wealth of talent to the guild. She is a fabric designer for Moda Fabrics, a prolific author, business manager and a quilt pattern designer for American Patchwork & Quilting, McCall’s Quilting, McCall’s Quick Quilts, Quilters World, Quilting Arts and the Fons and Porter magazines. Every Monday Carol interviews famous people in the quilting world on American Patchwork & Quilting Radio. Her fabric and applique patterns are fun, bright, and colorful.

At the NSQG meeting on Thursday, Aug. 15, Sloan will lecture and share some tips for faster quilting with her presentation, “First Quilt.” Afterward, she will offer two workshops: Friday, Aug. 16: “Wild and Free Applique,” and Saturday, Aug 17: “Kiss Me Goodnight, a Scrap Lovers Delight.”

To register for Sloan’s and other artist’s workshops, quilters are invited to join NSQG members at the Summer Potluck to be held on Thursday, July 18, at the Rolling Meadows Community Center, 3705 Pheasant Drive in Rolling Meadows. During this social event, program Chairman Jane Underys will unveil the guild’s 2013-2014 programs schedule and on this day only, members may sign up for workshops at a reduced rate. If you have been thinking about joining the guild, the potluck is the time to join and save money on workshop fees. Bring a dish to share — it is a fun event and great time to meet NSQG members and learn all about the guild’s activities.

The public can enjoy the results of past workshops when members flaunt their talents at the NSQG’s biennial quilt show, “Our Quilts in Bloom,” to be held Sept. 20-21 at the Prairie Stone Sports & Wellness Center, 5050 Sedge Blvd. in Hoffman Estates. Enjoy a large variety of quilts in various techniques, patterns, shapes and sizes; enter a chance to win the guild’s raffle quilt or doll; or bid on dozens of mini quilts sewn by members. Learn the history behind vintage quilts at the antique bed turning or bring a quilt to be appraised. Admission coupons are available at area quilt shops.

Quilt show hours are: 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20 and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21. Details are available at nsqg.net/quiltshows.

NSQG was incorporated in Arlington Heights in 1979, and is one of the largest and oldest guilds with over 200 members from all over the Chicago region; all levels of quilting expertise are welcomed. The guild meets on the third Thursday of every month, excluding December, at the Concorde Banquets, 20922 N. Rand Road in Kildeer.

At each monthly meeting, world class quilting instructors are invited to lecture and inspire the audience with their colorful quilts and exceptional creativity. Workshops may be available on the following Friday and Saturday. Join the club on Facebook or email nsqg.info@gmail.com.
