Suburbs have 10 days to ban assault weapons

With a new law approving concealed handguns to be a reality soon, communities throughout the suburbs will have 10 days to create another addition to the law by banning assault weapons within their communities. Arlington Heights’ first full-time firefighter dies

The Arlington Heights Fire Department’s first full-time firefighter, David Mills, has died. Mills was 84. Mills was hired in 1957 and worked for the department for 32 years, becoming deputy chief before retiring in 1989. Full story.

Gas station near Glen Ellyn draws ire

Plans for a new gas station, convenience store and car wash in an unincorporated area near Glen Ellyn has potential neighbors concerned that their property would be affected. The 1.5-acre development is proposed for the northeast corner of Route 53 and Butterfield Road. Full story.

Fire causes extensive damage to South Barrington home

A South Barrington home struck by lightning yesterday afternoon was damaged extensively, but the homeowners were able to escape without injury. The red, brick house on the 0-100 block of Terra Vita Drive burned throughout the afternoon, as firefighters from numerous nearby departments shuttled water in to fight the blaze. Motorcyclists hurt in Gurnee crashes

Two motorcyclists were injured in separate crashes Monday in Gurnee and were taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center. One suffered minor injuries, but the other remains in the intensive care unit, fire officials said yesterday. Full story.

Arlington Heights ends fiscal year with $3.5 million surplus

In one of the village’s strongest years since the recession, Arlington Heights leaders say they’ve ended the fiscal year with a $3.5 million surplus. A number of one-time revenues led to the surplus, which officials say they’ll use to help pay for several long-term projects in the village. Full story.
