Citizens key to independence

As we celebrate Independence Day, I’ve been thinking about the reasons why the United States was founded.

The colonists wanted government representation and fought for this right. The result was a new, independent nation.

On June 26, I participated in Carol Sente’s End of Session Town Hall meeting in Lincolnshire. This was my first meeting. Those in attendance ranged from high school interns learning about government to seniors living on fixed incomes.

There was informed discussion about education, pension reform and “green” projects. My purpose in going was to discuss how we can create a better environment for small businesses in Illinois. The backbone of our economy, small businesses want to establish themselves and grow in Illinois. They will create jobs in our communities.

Reducing government fees and awarding a larger portion of state contracts to qualified small businesses is a way to promote growth in Illinois. I’m working with the Small Business Advocacy Council to unite small business owners to speak with one voice on common issues.

Countries in other parts of the world are demonstrating for more, or better, government representation. This is a right citizens of the United States enjoy. Democracy works best when there is citizen involvement. In the future, I would go to another town hall or coffee talk meeting. I would encourage my neighbors to make time and do the same.

My family has a history of military service. My father was a career naval officer. My grandfather was a World War I veteran who fought in Belgium. I fully understand the sacrifice and price of freedom.

I value my right to vote and be heard. Please take a moment on this Independence Day to consider your role in our democracy.
