Public works dept. sees slew of new hires due to retirements

The Village of Lombard is pleased to announce recent hires and career moves as a result of retirements within the Public Works Department. Public Works anticipates the retirement of 20 of 52 employees between March 2013 and March 2014, resulting in an anticipated overall savings of $447,415 in the first year of the Early Retirement Program.

Public Works Director Carl Goldsmith said the transition presents both a challenge and an opportunity to his department.

“The primary goal in replacing employees is providing quality services at the most efficient and cost effective manner,” Goldsmith said. . “The loss of institutional knowledge from the retiring employees has to be taken into account, while the enthusiasm and innovation of newer members of the department can be of great value.”

Promotions

Erik Lindgren has worked for the Village's Public Works Department since 1997, and as of July 1, will be promoted to the Crew Leader in the Utilities Division. Goldsmith said Lindgren was selected after an internal search was conducted by the department.

Lindgren's great knowledge of water system was instrumental in developing the Village's fire hydrant maintenance project that has led to savings and greater responsiveness to repairs, Goldsmith said.

“We're excited to have Erik join the Public Works management team,” Goldsmith said. “His energy, enthusiasm and passion for public service will help us improve the services we provide to the public. We look forward to Erik bringing a fresh approach to the day-to-day in Public Works and wish him success in his new position.”
