Marmion JROTC Academic Team competes in national championship

After advancing through two phases of competition, Marmion Academy’s JROTC Academic Team is competing in the final championship round of The College Options Foundation’s 2013 JROTC Leadership and Academic Bowl. The championship started Friday, June 21, on the campus of George Mason University in Washington, D.C., and will continue through Tuesday, June 25.

The 2013 JROTC Academic Team is comprised of juniors Daniel Creighton, of Geneva; Eric Lifka, of Aurora; Brian Simon, of LaGrange; and Zachary Wulbert, of Batavia; along with sophomores Joseph Dutton, of Aurora; Thomas Sieben, of Aurora; and Robert Stephens, of Bartlett.

Marmion Academy’s JROTC team competed in two rounds of competitive online play against students from over 1,700 other high schools across the nation and overseas to win its place in the championship and a trip to Washington, D.C.

In these rounds, students were tested on standard high school curriculum, such as math, science and English, leadership skills and current events.

Marmion’s team is only one of 24 in the nation to advance to the Army finals.

The JROTC Leadership and Academic Bowl is a nationally recognized academic competition created exclusively for JROTC students.

By participating, cadets learn the values of citizenship, academic competition and college opportunity. The competition creates tremendous opportunities for JROTC and its cadets by demonstrating the academic abilities of JROTC students.

Marmion’s Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps is a U.S. Army high school program.

In the program, cadets learn to become better citizens through classes focusing on history, leadership and oral communication.

They take part in military drill, inspections and parades. As they advance through the ranks, they assume increasing responsibility for leadership among other cadets in their company.

The JROTC program supports a competitive Rifle Team and Drill Team. In addition, cadets can participate in an Adventure Platoon and a one-week JROTC summer camp. For information, visit www.marmion.org.
