23 arrested in connection with drug trafficking

Chicago police and federal DEA officials say 23 people have been arrested and charged in connection with the distribution of heroin and cocaine in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.

Authorities announced Thursday an investigation over several months by Chicago and the Drug Enforcement Administration also resulted in the seizure of approximately three pounds of heroin and nearly nine pounds of cocaine. Additional drugs, two guns and cash were also seized Thursday.

Those arrested were charged with possession with intent to distribute or distribution of narcotics offenses. The complaint was filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court and unsealed following the arrests.

U.S. Attorney Gary Shapiro said while the 23 arrested weren’t accused of violence, the charges filed are effective in reducing community violence.

It wasn’t immediately known if those charged have lawyers.
