TXT a TIP at Your Fingertips
Use Cell Phone to Send Anonymous Tips to Police
Summer's finally here. People are outside enjoying the warm weather. To be safe, the Maine Community Youth Assistance Foundation and local police advise residents to observe their surroundings and use TXT a TIP to notify police of suspicious activity, non-urgent crimes, or safety issues. Anyone with a cell phone can send an anonymous tip with a simple text message. Because it's totally anonymous, police hope teens who might not contact authorities otherwise, and adults as well, will use TXT a TIP.
Anonymous, Easy to Use
Using TXT a TIP is easy. First, enter the keyword “ICARE” followed by a text message of up to 160 characters. Tips should be sent to C-R-I-M-E-S (274637), a third party data encryption center. Special technology scrambles the messenger's cell phone number and identity so the tipster remains anonymous but still allows a two-way text dialogue between the cell phone user and police. Anyone who sends a legitimate tip will not get in trouble with the police.
TXT a TIP can be used to contact police with non-life threatening illegal activities or safety issues, such as alcohol and drug related parties or problems, threatening messages on Facebook, bullying, theft, vandalism or unsolved crimes. In the event of an emergency, residents should still call 9-1-1.
“TXT a TIP is a tool for citizens who want to provide a tip or clue to the police but would like to remain anonymous. I encourage people to send us a text if they have information that will help make this a safe and enjoyable summer,” said Park Ridge Police Chief Frank Kaminski.
Des Plaines and Park Ridge are among hundreds of cities that now use text messaging to keep residents safe and prevent crime. MCYAF, the Maine Community Youth Assistance Foundation, provides funds to operate the program. More information about TXT a TIP is available through your local police department or from MCYAF at www.mcyaf.com or (847) 858-7090.
