Dual Silvers for Wheeling Boy

Evan Valenzuela took two silver medals home to Wheeling after the 2013 USA Taekwondo (USAT) Illinois State Championship held in Ottawa, IL. With his 2nd-place finishes for Poomsae (known as Form) and Sparring, the 8-year-old now qualifies to compete in the 2013 USAT National Championship most commonly known as the Taekwondo Junior Olympics which is being held in Chicago, July 3-9.

A Black belt, Valenzuela studies martial arts at the White Tiger Martial Arts Center (WTMAC) in Wheeling under the instruction of Head Master Shik Lee. “When I saw Evan land shot after shot I knew he was going to do well,” said Lee.

The United States Olympic Committee recognizes USAT as the governing body for the sport in the United States. Valenzuela was amongst an estimated 1000 athletes who traveled from around the Midwest to complete and his victory at this state-level competition is what now qualifies him for the Junior Olympics.
