Jackson Jr.’s lawyers ask for leniency
WASHINGTON — Lawyers for Jesse Jackson Jr. assert in a court filing that the former Illinois congressman’s mental health may worsen if he is given a lengthy prison sentence.
Last week, federal prosecutors in Washington recommended four years in prison for Jackson. He pleaded guilty earlier this year to charges he spent $750,000 in campaign funds on personal items.
The government suggests an 18-month sentence for Jackson’s wife. Sandra Jackson pleaded guilty to filing false joint federal income tax returns.
In their filing, Jackson’s lawyers noted their client accepted complete responsibility for his actions. They say he is remorseful and has already been made an example of with his resignation.
Jackson’s attorneys say his depression and bipolar disorder require intense ongoing treatment and is a reason to impose a lenient sentence.
