Dundee Township Rotary Club announces its “Service Above Self” Award Recipient
The Dundee Township Rotary Club recognized Barbara Ferguson of Sleepy Hollow with the club’s special “Service Above Self” Award at its meeting on June 4, 2013 at Emmett’s Tavern, 128 Main Street in West Dundee.
“Our club is pleased to honor Barbara for her years of dedicated service within our community,” said Jim Bolz, president of the Dundee Township Rotary Club. “Barbara embodies the object of Rotary, which is to encourage and foster the ideal of service.”
Andy Alpeter, Service Above Self Award chairman and past president of the Dundee Township Rotary Club added that “Barbara is a great lady who has and continues to dedicate herself to working within the Dundee communities to make our area a better place to live and work.”
“The thousands of dollars that have been given back into the local communities from several local organizations are a direct result of Barbara’s hard work and dedication. We at the Dundee Township Rotary Club are proud to honor Barbara with our 2013 Service above Self Award.
Ferguson has left her indelible imprint on the Dundee Township community for over 30 years. She is a current board member of Summit School, Inc., the Boys and Girls Club of Dundee Township and the Northwest Suburban United Way. She previously served as a board director of the Dundee Township United Way, Community Crisis Center and League of Women Voters. She continues as an active member of Saint Catherine of Siena Church in West Dundee.
Through her involvement with the Boys and Girls Club of Dundee Township (BGCDT), Ferguson was awarded the 2012 Outstanding Boys and Girls Club America Board Volunteer of the Year Award for the State of Illinois. She has volunteered 16 years of Board Service with the Boys and Girls Club of Dundee Township, serving on a variety of leadership roles and committees over the years.
Always an avid supporter of the BGCDT, Ferguson’s passion for its mission, along with her ever present smile, sets her apart. She, and her husband Roger, are beloved for their Annual Dinner “500 homemade Cookies” Live Auction donation, which has raised nearly $50,000 over the past three years.
Ferguson’s board service with the Northwest Suburban United Way has been meaningful in helping the Boys and Girls Club of Dundee Township. Her advocacy for the organization, specifically its geographic region, assisted the BGCDT to acquire a $200,000 Education Grant through the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago.
Ferguson is a graduate of University of San Francisco with a Bachelor’s degree in both Education and World Literature. She and her husband Roger have two children and seven grandchildren.
The Rotary Club of Dundee Township received nominations for the “Service Above Self” Awards from members of the Club and the community. Requirements included that nominees must be a resident of Dundee Township and that, individually or through their businesses, do something of value or merit, or make a contribution of significance to the community where they live or work.
The main objective of Rotary International is service, in the community, and throughout the world. As volunteers, Rotarians build goodwill and peace, provide humanitarian service, and encourage high ethical standards in all vocations. There are 1.2 million Rotarians in more than 31,000 clubs in more than 163 countries.
