Oak Brook Rotary sponsors a needy senior

Rotary Club of Oak Brook recently donated $400 to sponsor a senior in the Humanitarian Service Project's (HSP) Senior Citizen Project (SCP). The $400 donation will partially support a senior in SCP for an entire year. The Rotary Club of Oak Brook has donated to HSP for the past sixteen years.

In 2012, the Rotary Club of Oak Brook celebrated its 50th anniversary. The Oak Brook division of the club was founded in 1962 and its current president is Tracy Mulqueen. The Rotary Club is an organization which has about 30,000 clubs in 160 countries across the globe. The international club boasts about 1.2 million members of all different backgrounds, cultures and ethnicities. The international groups of Rotary Clubs focus on community service projects that address many of today's most critical issues such as: children at risk, poverty and hunger, the environment, illiteracy, and violence.

The purpose of the SCP is to provide for the basic and nutritional needs of 121 needy, local seniors. The seniors in the SCP are impoverished and cannot be helped financially by their families. On top of being unsupported financially, they often have medical conditions which prevent them from being mobile. All of the seniors in the program are severely impoverished, and buying groceries that are beneficial to their health is out of the question. HSP provides monthly deliveries of 100 lbs of groceries to each of the 121 seniors in the program which include: selections of 7 fresh fruits and 8 vegetables, 7 kinds of frozen meats, 3 loaves of Pepperidge Farm bread, 4 bags of non-perishable foods, and 2 bags of paper products (paper towels, facial tissue and toilet paper). Also, every three months, the needy seniors receive a package of personal care items with their delivery including, shampoo, conditioner, a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, lotion, soap, and hand sanitizer. It costs $800 to fully sponsor a needy senior in the project for a year.

The Rotary Club of Oak Brook's co-sponsorship of this needy senior is one way in which the club stays committed to the Rotary International motto of “Service about Self.” In addition to co-sponsoring a senior in the SCP, they also offer support to the Salvation Army Center in Oakbrook Terrance, award savings bonds to local school children, and prepare meals for the Ronald McDonald House near Loyola University Medical Center.

They have also recently been accepted for the Greater Oak Brook Chamber of Commerce membership. The club meets every Tuesday from 12:15-1:30 at Costa's Restaurant in Oakbrook Terrace.

About The Humanitarian Service Project:

HSP's mission is to alleviate the pain and suffering that poverty creates in seniors and children living in DuPage and Kane Counties, Illinois. Last year during the Christmas Offering, 1,636 children received gifts and 150 impoverished families received three weeks of groceries, frozen meats, and fresh produce. With the Senior Citizen Project, HSP provides monthly food deliveries of 100 pounds including fresh produce, frozen meats, non-perishables, paper products and secret pal gifts to 121 low-income seniors. The Children's Birthday Project reaches the youngest underprivileged, making birthdays and Christmas truly memorable occasions for 900 children. Feed the Kids program provides 100 low-income families with groceries and fresh produce. HSP conducts an annual school supplies drive, which sends supplies to the DuPage Back to School Fair in addition to furnishing schools and individual children with necessary supplies.
