Nursing center, senior club host free health, fitness fair

In honor of National Senior Health & Fitness Day 2013, the Highwood Senior Social Club and the Highland Park Nursing & Rehab Center (HPNRC) hosted a free health and fitness fair for senior citizens. Roughly 50 attendees came to Highwood's beautiful HPNRC on Wednesday, May 29th from 1-4pm for a day of complimentary health screenings, fitness demonstrations, light bites and refreshments.

Various fitness & health instructors held 20 minute sessions and demonstrations exclusively for seniors including: tai chi by Kung Fu Power, stretching and low impact aerobics by Fit Stop, yoga by Sport & Spirit focusing on balance, and ballet demonstrated by JoAnne Lowe, a former choreographer and dance teacher at The Lowe Academy of Dance. Additionally, dietician Susan Martin educated seniors and guests on nutrition, diet, and offered healthy snacks, along with organic coffee and tea from Lynn Miller.

The event also brought area hospitals and professionals together to provide complimentary health screenings for diabetes, glucose, blood pressure, vision and hearing. Walgreens featured blood pressure screenings and consultations on different medications, CJE Senior Life provided osteoporosis screenings, the Lion's Club brought in their accessible bus for hearing checks, the Lake County Health Department's North Shore Health Center supplied guests with blood glucose screenings, and the NorthShore University HealthSystem provided blood pressure screenings and blood pressure checks.

"The City of Highwood is very proud to work in conjunction with Highland Park Nursing & Rehab to enrich the lives of our seniors," says Highwood Mayor Charlie Pecaro. “This is the first event in a series of many for the Highwood Senior Social Club.”
