Arlington Heights Resident's Expertise in GI Surgical Oncology Benefitting Loyola

Sam G. Pappas, MD, FACS, has brought his expertise in surgical oncology to Loyola University Health System. He also is an associate professor in the Department of Surgery at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine and Section Head of Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery in the Division of Surgical Onoclogy.

His medical interests include surgical treatment of pancreas, liver, stomach, bile duct and esophagus cancers. His also is a leading expert in robotic surgery treatment for patients with gastrointestinal cancers.

In addition to his surgical skills he is a renowned researcher and teacher having been an invited lecturer and presenter at medical conferences around the world. He has authored numerous articles, several book chapters and edited a book pertaining to surgical oncology. His research has been published in scholarly journals including the American Journal of Surgery, Annals of Surgical Oncology, International Journal of Surgical Oncology, Journal of the American College of Surgeons and Surgery.

He is affiliated with several professional societies. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the American Pancreatic Association, the Central Surgical Society, the American College of Surgeons Cooperative Oncology Group and National Surgery Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project.

Before joining Loyola, Pappas was on the faculty of Medical College of Wisconsin. He earned his medical school degree from Rush Medical College and completed his residencies in general surgery at Finch University of Health Sciences Chicago Medical School at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Chicago and Northwestern Memorial Hospital of Northwestern University. He also completed a basic science surgical oncology research fellowship at Northwestern during his residency. His clinical surgical oncology fellowship was at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
