Immanuel Lutheran reigns as math champions

Immanuel Lutheran School in Palatine, known for its athletic championships, brought home another championship — this one in academics.

Immanuel Lutheran competed in the Chicago Area Lutheran School Math Contest and brought home the team championship for the third consecutive year.

In addition, Immanuel seventh-grader Keith Von Holt had the highest individual score of all seventh-graders, while sixth-graders Ben Heuertz and Jakob Zemba tied for second overall in the sixth-grade competition.

The competition, sponsored by Walther Lutheran High School in Melrose Park, provides two tests: one for fifth- and sixth-graders and another for seventh- and eighth-graders. The top five scores are averaged for each grade from each school, then all four grades are added to determine the overall team math champion.

“Immanuel Lutheran has a long-standing tradition of being a top school in our academic competitions,” said Kyle Clauss, director of recruitment at Walther Lutheran.

“They have continued their impressive streak of finishing in the top ranks among other schools in math.”

“We don’t do anything special to prepare our students for the math competition,” said Richard Dewitt, math instructor at Immanuel Lutheran. “I am extremely proud of all of our students, their work ethics and their abilities. As a teacher, it’s rewarding to see our students perform so well academically.”

Immanuel Lutheran won the Walther Lutheran Overall Team Math Championship in 2013, 2012 and 2011, and finished second in 2010.
