Beth Tikvah’s ‘Pocketful of Sunshine’ supports local social services

On Sunday, May 5, Beth Tikvah Congregation in Hoffman Estates hosted its first Michael Shai Siver Pocketful of Sunshine 5K to benefit the preschool scholarship fund established in memory of Michael Siver, one of its students.

The event was accompanied by blue skies and happy faces as the community gathered to celebrate the memory of this special child. Joining the congregants to kickoff the event were Mayor William D. McLeod and other trustees of the village of Hoffman Estates.

The 5K was followed by Beth Tikvah’s annual Mitzvah Day during which congregation members of all ages participated in activities benefiting local social service agencies including Gigi’s Playhouse which is a Down syndrome awareness organization, Supersibs which serves siblings of children with cancer, Friendship Village of Schaumburg, Jewish Children and Family Services and the Children’s Oncology Unit at Advocate’s Lutheran General.

In another exciting development, the community started a vegetable and herb garden to provide healthy food and hunger-relief to friends and neighbors in the Hoffman Estates/Schaumburg area. Most of the produce grown will be donated to local emergency food providers.

Another highlight of the day was the “Mitzvah Fair” at which members could learn about volunteer opportunities with local organizations.
