Annual “Poppy Days” fundraiser supports hospitalized veterans

Submitted by American Legion Post 208

Across the country, American Legion members will hold their annual Poppy Days’ fundraiser over Memorial Day weekend. Locally, members of American Legion Post 208 will be highly visible on Saturday, May 25, at various intersections and at store fronts requesting your donations in exchange for a red crepe paper poppy that was handmade by a hospitalized veteran.

The poppy has been the memorial flower of the American Legion since 1920. Today the poppy is a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice and is worn to honor the men and women who served and died for their country in all wars.

During Poppy Days, all monies collected by post and auxiliary volunteers are earmarked for programs that assist in the rehabilitation of our veterans and support for their families. In the past, the generosity of the local community has made it possible for Post 208 to provide much needed financial aid to our three Chicago area VA hospitals.
