Elgin Police: One hurt in gang-related shooting

Elgin police are investigating a shooting from early Sunday morning that may have been gang-related.

Police responded to reports of shots fired at about 1:35 a.m. and found a 23-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his leg near Jefferson Avenue and Porter Street, according to officials. The injured man was taken to Sherman Hospital, police said.

Witnesses said two groups approached each other and spoke briefly before one side fired shots at the other, according to police. That group from which the shots were fired fled immediately while the other side stayed at the scene with the injured man.

Police Cmdr. Glenn Theriault said the Elgin Police Department Gang Unit is investigating. Anyone with information should call (847) 289-2646. People can also provide anonymous tips to (847) 695-4195 or by texting ELGINPD and the message to 847411.

Theriault said there were reports of more shots fired about 3:30 a.m. on the 500 block of Wellington Avenue, but no victims or witnesses were able to provide further information. Police do not see any immediate connection between the two reports.
