'Mormon' departs Chicago stage in October
"The Book of Mormon," the gleefully profane, wickedly satirical musical by "South Park" creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone and composer/lyricist Robert Lopez, departs Chicago in October, according to an Allied Live announcement Thursday.
Broadway in Chicago's second national tour of the Tony Award-winning show arrived at Chicago's Bank of America Theatre on Dec. 11.
During its record-breaking preview week, grosses totaled nearly $1.5 million. The show - about young Mormon missionaries trying to convert villagers in strife-ridden Uganda - sold out through March 2013, prompting several extensions, the last of which concludes Oct. 6. By then, the show will have played in Chicago for 43 weeks and 344 performances.
A spokesman for Allied Live, which handles "Mormon's" marketing, declined to comment on the reasons the production is packing up its skinny black ties, crisp white dress shirts and tap shoes and leaving town. Spokesman John Gilmour also declined to provide information on ticket sales.
A news release indicated that the tour will travel to Denver, San Francisco and Los Angeles this year before returning to Chicago during the 2014-15 season. Gilmour declined to provide dates for a return engagement.
The final block of tickets for "The Book of Mormon" go on sale at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 18, at broadwayinchicago.com, by phone at (800) 775-2000 or at Broadway in Chicago box offices at 24 W. Randolph St.; 151 W. Randolph St.; 18 W. Monroe St. and 175 E. Chestnut St., in Chicago. Tickets are also available at the BIC ticket kiosk at Water Tower Place, 845 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago and through Ticketmaster.
