JourneyCare to sponsor presentation by author

JourneyCare (formerly Hospice and Palliative Care of Northeastern Illinois) will co-sponsor presentations by world-renowned author and speaker Maggie Callanan May 21 and 22 titled “Understanding Unique & Symbolic Language Near End of Life.”

A hospice nurse for 15 years, Callanan has studied, taught and written about the unique and symbolic communication of the dying, which is often labeled as “confused,” dementia,” or “delirium,” and ignored by professional and family caregivers.

In actuality, the individual may be trying to give important, hidden messages about what they need.

Callanan is the co-author of “Final Gifts: Understanding the Special Awareness and Needs and Communication of the Dying” and author of “Final Journeys: A Practical Guide to Care and Comfort at End of Life.”

She has spoken internationally on this subject and many others related to the care of the dying, as well as coping strategies for those who work with individuals at or near end-of-life.

She is the coordinator and primary writer for the “Dealing with Death” section of the American Journal of Nursing and is a board member of the International Association of Near Death Studies.

The presentations are as follows:

Ÿ Tuesday, May 21: Noon-1:30 p.m. Sherman Hospital, fourth floor Medical Office Building, 1425 N. Randall Road, Elgin.

Ÿ Tuesday May 21: 5-7 p.m. The Moorings of Arlington Heights, 811 E. Central Road, Arlington Heights.

Ÿ Wednesday, May 22: 7:30-9 a.m. Hawthorn Lakes, 10 E. Hawthorn Parkway, Vernon Hills.
