Chicago man dies in crash that shuts down outbound Kennedy

A Chicago man was killed and two others injured in a crash Monday morning that shut down the outbound lanes of the Kennedy Expressway.

Illinois State Police Master Sgt. S. Nowak said the crash occurred on westbound I-90 just east of River Road about 6:10 a.m.

Rufino Sanchez, 65, of Chicago, was slowing down in the right center lane when his SUV was hit from behind by a semitrailer truck, Nowak said. He was pronounced dead shortly after the crash.

Upon the impact, Sanchez’s SUV hit a town car that was slowing down in front of him. The car veered to left and struck the concrete barrier, injuring the driver and a passenger. Both were taken to Resurrection Hospital in Chicago with nonlife threatening injuries and later released, Nowak said.

An Indiana man who was driving the truck was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash, according to police. Additional charges are possible.

The expressway was shut down for the better part of the morning commute as rescue crews responded and police investigated the scene. Police said the crash remains under investigation.
