Fox correspondent to deliver keynote at BADC dinner

The Barrington Area Development Council, the nonprofit civic organization supporting programs and initiatives that are Good for Barrington!, is pleased to announce that Michael Tobin, a Fox News Channel international correspondent and Barrington-area native, will deliver the keynote address at the upcoming BADC annual dinner and Citizen of the Year Award, which will be Wednesday, May 8, at the Makray Memorial Golf Club on Northwest Highway in Barrington.

Tobin has been on network assignments for key events throughout the world. He has provided on-site coverage from the Israeli-Lebanese border during the conflict in the Middle East, and has reported on the evacuation of Jewish settlements from the Gaza Strip, the Iraqi elections in Baghdad and Operation Iraqi Freedom from Centcom in Doha, Qatar.

More recently, he covered the May 2011 aftermath of the Joplin, Mo., tornado, the investigation of the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., in December, and the Boston Marathon bombing this spring.

Tobin will reflect upon national and worldwide events and their effects on local communities in remarks titled “From Barrington to the World.”

An alumnus of Barrington High School, Tobin has received several local Associated Press Awards for news reporting and is a graduate of Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Telecommunications.

“Michael brings so many captivating perspectives about global events, with an emphasis on the people in each locale,” said Jack Schaefer, president of BADC. “We’re looking forward to the insights and leanings he’ll share with us, from the unique vantage points he’s experienced,” he added.

The BADC annual dinner meeting brings together volunteers of local organizations, elected officials, and community leaders in a tribute to community service and to honor the award recipient.

Last year, BADC presented its 2012 Citizen of the Year Award to Carol Nelson, who has played integral roles in many nonprofit initiatives in the Barrington area, including as co-chair of the fundraising campaigns for Hospice and Palliative Care of Northeastern Illinois — now JourneyCare.

This year’s event features a Showcase of Community Organizations, with the leaders of nearly two dozen local organizations displaying information about their groups and how to become involved.

Those interested in attending should RSVP by Friday, May 3, by emailing BADC at info@The-BADC.org or by calling (847) 382-HELP (4357) with attendee names, phone numbers, and email addresses, and then sending a check for $60 per person, made payable to BADC, to: BADC Annual Dinner, P.O. Box 72, Barrington, IL 60011. Your check completes your reservation.

BADC annually searches the ranks of community volunteers in the area to find an outstanding but little recognized individual or organization. BADC looks for a worthy recipient for its annual community service award, which is given to a community leader who consistently has been involved in volunteer work and has quietly sought to meet the needs of the Barrington-area communities.

A BADC committee selects the winner from nominees representing — but not limited to — such diverse fields as health care, conservation, preservation, education, youth work, public service, business and transportation.

The Barrington Area Development Council is a nonprofit civic organization with a long history of sponsoring initiatives and organizations that have benefited the Barrington Area community, including CPR Training, the Bikeways Commission, the District 220 Caucus, Barrington Bloodline, the Holiday Wish List, the Leadership Academy, and the Citizen of the Year Award.

In addition, BADC was the founding organization of the Barrington Area Council of Governments in the 1970s and a catalyst participating in the formation of renowned groups such as the Barrington Area Council on Aging and Citizens for Conservation.

More recently, BADC has participated as a founding co-sponsor of HERE in Barrington — the Mental Health Awareness Coalition of Teens, Parents, and Community Leaders in the Barrington Area.
