Mother and son charged after shots fired in Elgin

An Elgin mother and her 14-year-old son were charged Friday with weapons offenses after the mother fired shots in the air outside her home, police said.

Twana Mosley, 35, of the 1000 block of Peachtree Lane, was charged with two counts of felony aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, felony reckless discharge of a firearm and one count of not having a valid Firearm Owner Identification Card, Elgin Police Cmdr. Glenn Theriault said in a news release.

Mosley’s son was charged with felony aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and one count of not having a valid FOID card, Theriault said.

Police responded to numerous 911 calls at 3:30 p.m. Friday reporting that a woman had just fired a gun in the Poplar Creek subdivision. Additional calls suggested the woman had multiple weapons.

Officers talked to witnesses and quickly surrounded the woman’s home. The suspects were taken into custody without incident, police said.

The investigation revealed that earlier that day, there was a neighborhood altercation involving Mosley’s relatives. Mosley found out about it, took two handguns outside her home to confront an individual involved in the altercation, and fired one round in the air, the release said.

The investigation also revealed that Mosley’s son brought two rifles outside to his mother. During a search of the residence, officers located and confiscated three handguns and two rifles.

Mosley’s son was released to family members, police said. Mosley is scheduled to appear at a Cook County bond hearing Sunday morning.
