Praise for lawmaker’s support of gay marriage
As a resident of Illinois, a constituent of House District 51 and the parent of a gay teenage child, I would like to thank state Rep. Ed Sullivan for standing up for what is right and having the courage to publicly announce his support for same-sex marriage, Senate Bill 10. As we’ve seen over the past few months, support is growing on this issue. But there is still fierce opposition, and it is important that we join together and applaud those brave enough to stand up for all families in our district and in our state.
Whenever there is a controversial issue that comes before an elected official, the official tends to sit idle, concerned with the potential backlash that could imperil his or her career. Sadly, this is true even with regard to marriage equality, which is really about basic fairness and equal treatment under the law. It is important that those of us who stand united with Rep. Sullivan show our support and let him know we appreciate his stance on this important issue. Thank you, Rep. Sullivan. We hope your support brings more “yes” votes, so that we can truly make Illinois a fair and equal state for all of residents.
