Exxon closes refinery in Joliet for maintenance

Exxon Mobil Corp. has shut the Joliet refinery in Illinois for “planned routine maintenance,” according to spokeswoman Tricia Simpson.

The closing, which includes all of its operating units, will be for “several weeks,” Simpson said in a telephone interview.

“We are having a full refinery turnaround,” she said. “We have made arrangements to make all the contractual obligations with our gasoline and diesel customers.”

The Joliet refinery can process 238,000 barrels a day, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The plant, which runs crude delivered by pipeline from Canada, produces about 9 million gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel daily, according to the company’s website.
