The Prairie Valley Family YMCA offers Spring Horsemanship I classes for youth ages 7 to 12. It is scheduled to begin April 16 at Indian Hills Training Center, 16N503 Powers Road in Gilberts.

The four-week program will be from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays, April 16 to May 7.

Another four-week session will be May 14-June 3.

Led by instructor Allison Cherkinian, the program incorporates training in basic horsemanship skills, including grooming, bridling, saddling, caring for horses and the basics of English balance seat. The minimum class size is three participants; maximum size is 10.

Cost per student is $125 for each four-week session.

“This is a new program for the Y, and we’re very excited for its potential,” said Jennifer Alberts, operations executive at the Gilberts Family Y.

“Kids can get a great introduction to the sport of horseback riding in just a few short lessons.”
