Judson University’s Center for Worship in the Performing Arts has announced several music concerts happening in April that are open to the public. All events will take place on Judson’s Elgin campus, 1151 N. State St.
The series will begin with a Judson Community Orchestra Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 14, in Herrick Chapel. Featuring both Judson students and musicians from the community, this concert will feature Franz Schubert’s “Unfinished Symphony” No. 8, as well as the Symphony No. 2 in D by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. The “Peer Gynt” Suite No. 1 by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg will round out the performance.
Tickets for this event are $10; $5 for students or seniors to be taken at the door.
The Judson Symphonic Band will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 25, in Herrick Chapel. The band, including Judson students and musicians from the community, will play a variety of tunes, including Percy Grainger’s “Londonderry Air,” Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries” and more. Tickets for this event are $10; $5 for students or seniors at the door.
Another concert, featuring Judson’s Guitar Ensemble and The Adoniram Trio will be at 7 p.m. Friday, April 26, in the Marjorie Thulin Performance Hall of the Thompson Center. Led by guitar professor Adam Huff, the ensemble consists of several Judson students playing acoustic classical guitar.
The Adoniram String Trio, comprised of music professors Joanna Newby (violin), Tara Hayes (viola) and Robert Weber (cello) will premiere an original piece composed by Judson music composition major senior Ben Richardson. There is no admission fee for this concert.
The music season will end with the spring choir and orchestra concert at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 28, in Herrick Chapel. The Judson University Choir, under the direction of Warren Anderson, and the Judson Community Orchestra, under the baton of Ernest Gross III, will join forces to present a concert of music featuring Judson alumnus pianist Huntley Brown, Class of 1988.
Brown is an internationally recognized and beloved musician, frequently performing with the Billy Graham Association. There is no admission fee for this event, but a freewill offering will be taken to benefit the Spring 2014 Judson University Choir Tour to Jamaica.
